Chrome Remote Desktop Windows Download: Everything You Need to Know

Chrome Remote Desktop is an application for accessing your desktop and its full functionality remotely via the Chrome browser or a Chromebook. It's used for all possible platforms and makes it a lot easier to manage your business and work affairs without having to go to a specific workstation.

After downloading and installing the application, it can be opened in the browser and looks a bit similar to an HTML page, even requiring you to log in using your Google account. The interface may look plain and generic in design, but its very informative and lets you get right down to business. The upper section called "Remote Assistance" lets users grant a device with Remote Desktop installed access to a different PC. It can be both automated and manual, using a PIN-code. Then you can access the list of devices supporting Chrome Remote Desktop for your selected Google account. Clicking on a selected name will open a separate window where, after PIN-code input, you will see the desktop of the second computer which you can use as if you are sitting right there at the computer. This is especially useful for cross-platform operations, with users being able to access both PC and Mac functionality, etc.

With Microsoft Remote Desktop clients, you can connect to Remote Desktop Services from Windows Server and remote PCs, and use and control desktops and apps that your admin has made available to you. There are clients available for many different types of devices on different platforms and form factors, such as desktops and laptops, tablets, smartphones, and through a web browser. Using your web browser on desktops and laptops, you can connect without having to download and install any software.

Here's a list of the Remote Desktop client apps and our documentation for connecting to Remote Desktop Services or remote PCs, where you can find download links, what's new, and learn how to install and use each client.

Chrome Remote Desktop supports two distinct setups: Always-allowed access or one-time access. The first configuration lets you connect to a system any time. This configuration works well for systems you control that are often (or always) powered on, such as as a desktop (or server). The second setup supports temporary remote access to a system with a one-time code. This option gives you a great way to handle remote support or troubleshooting.

Chrome Remote Desktop is a rather obscure Google product, but that doesn't mean it's not useful. Once the desktop application is installed, you can control it from any Android device, iOS device, or computer (with Chrome). In my testing, it actually works extremely well, often with a lower latency than popular remote access applications like TeamViewer.

Still, this is one of the best free remote desktop applications, and v53 only makes it better. However, the desktop app is still a Chrome app, which Google is phasing out on Windows/Mac/Linux. Google will have to convert the desktop app to a Chrome extension (or to an actual native application) in the near future to ensure users can still access it.

If you want to be able to access your own computer from another desktop or mobile device, start by opening up Chrome on the host computer (or downloading and installing Chrome, if you're using a Windows, Mac, or Linux system that somehow doesn't already have it). Within Chrome, navigate to Google's Chrome Remote Desktop web app and click the circular blue arrow icon inside the box labeled "Set up remote access." (If you see a blue button labeled "Turn On" instead of a blue arrow, congratulations: You're one step ahead! Skip the next paragraph, and you'll be back on track.)

If you ever want to disable remote connections, just go back to remotedesktop.google.com/access or click the Chrome Remote Desktop icon to the right of your browser's address bar. You can then click the trash can icon alongside your computer's name to remove it from the app. Alternatively, you can simply uninstall the app altogether by right-clicking its icon and selecting "Remove from Chrome."

Once you have the access code and are ready to connect, simply go to remotedesktop.google.com/support within Chrome on any other computer. Enter the access code in the "Give Support" box and then click the "Connect" button to begin.

Chrome Remote Desktop is fully cross-platform. Provide remote assistance to Windows, Mac and Linux users, or access your Windows (XP and above) and Mac (OS X 10.6 and above) desktops at any time, all from the Chrome browser on virtually any device, including Chromebooks.

Chrome Remote Desktop is a remote desktop software tool, developed by Google, that allows a user to remotely control another computer's desktop through a proprietary protocol also developed by Google, internally called Chromoting.[2][3] The protocol transmits the keyboard and mouse events from the client to the server, relaying the graphical screen updates back in the other direction over a computer network. This feature therefore consists of a server component for the host computer, and a client component on the computer accessing the remote server. Note that Chrome Remote Desktop uses a unique protocol, as opposed to using the common Remote Desktop Protocol (developed by Microsoft[4]).

The Chrome Remote Desktop client was originally a Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store requiring Google Chrome; the extension is deprecated, and a web portal is available at remotedesktop.google.com. The browser must support WebRTC and other unspecified "modern web platform features".[5] The client software is also available on Android[6] and iOS.[7]

If the computer hosts remote access, such as for remote support and system administration,[8] a server package is downloaded.[9] A Chromium-based browser that supports Chromium extensions such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge must be used. This is available for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux and ChromeOS.[10]

The protocol uses VP8 video encoding to display the remote computer's desktop to the user with high performance over low bandwidth connections.[12][unreliable source?] Under Windows, it supports copying and pasting across the two devices and real-time audio feed as well, but lacks an option to disable sharing and transmission of the audio stream. The software is limited to 100 clients. Attempting to add further PCs after reaching 100 will result in a "failed to register computer" error.[13]

Again, you should go ahead and follow this procedure on all computers you want to be able to access remotely. Note that you can simply install it on a Mac and Windows machine and access the Mac from Windows or vice versa. If you install the app on your phone, you can access your desktop computers from an Apple or Android device. Unfortunately, the Chrome Remote Desktop app is not available in the Microsoft App store yet.

Even if I expand it to full screen, the Mac desktop remains at 1440900 on my Windows machine. If I connect the other way around, the app has two options to help out: Resize desktop to fit and Shrink to fit. The first option is supposed to change the resolution on the remote computer and the second option simply resizes the desktop on the host computer.

Overall, for being completely free and giving me the ability to connect to pretty much any computer using so many different devices, Chrome Remote Desktop is fantastic. Obviously, there are a lot of other options out there that can probably do more than Chrome, but some cost money and others require more complex setups. For an easy-to-use remote desktop solution that anybody can get working in no time, check out Chrome Remote Desktop. Enjoy!

Also, you can remotely access and control a desktop with an Android or iOS device. We'll show you how to install Chrome Remote Desktop on each platform so you have everything you need to use it. You'll need a Google account, so make sure that's set up before proceeding.

Chrome Remote Desktop requires you to install an app to get remote support or access your computers from anywhere. We'll assume you want to access your computer remotely; if not, you'll find a download link for the required app in the Get Support section of the Remote Support tab instead.

Next, you'll see a prompt to download a file called chromeremotedesktophost.msi. Save this somewhere convenient, then click Accept & Install in the Ready to install box to run the installer.

Click the Download button in the Set up remote access section to download it. Choose a location to save the DMG file, then open it to reveal the installer file inside.

Google says that "all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted." Combined with the fact that you need a PIN to connect to your remote devices, you can be reasonably sure that Chrome Remote Desktop sessions are safe from snooping. For best results, use strong PINs that aren't easy to guess.

Chrome Remote Desktop is remote desktop software that allows you to remotely control another computer from any computer running Windows, macOS or Linux. Additionally, you can use an iOS or Android mobile device to access a computer remotely. 2ff7e9595c
